Show Day and summary of the project

The last week of February was quite stressful and the whole period before was pretty busy. I was responsible for Intro and Outro animations made from my Metsä I drawing and panoramic photomanipulations. Intro was to lead the person into the world of mistery, secrets, spirits, whisperss.. Talking about the whispers! Some days before the Show Day we had a huge brainstorm about the name of the project, 'cause all creations should have a name.

Forest Whispers
is the official name of the project. Why such a name? What are the Whispers? Well nobody knows, it's up to personal interpretation. They can be something real, like musicians and dancers, or totally surreal. The whispers heard in the music background were giving shivers all over your spine. And here we are in 2D and 3D videos part which was sometimes confusing in all good means. You got the feeling you're lost in this strange forest that you look for something being surrounded by Whispers.. On one side wanting to follow them, on the other one to run away from them as far as possible. No matter which way you choose you're still IN the forest, literally. The enchanting dance of the dancers around the spectator and music played live added much more to the experience. It's one of the rare cases where the whole room of the CAVE was included, so not only the screen but also the whole space around. I heard a lot of positive opinions about this idea.

The Outro consisted of the panoramic photomanipulation transisting into the Metsä I drawing accompanied by my sound composition "marsz umarłych" (the march of the dead). The spectactor gets the feeling like nothing would ever happen at all, like that before was only a dream or a nightmare or something unreal and then status quo everything stayed the same or not? Is it the same forest still? What's the true story behind..?

I'm happy I could have been a part of this project I learnt how to present my ideas to the others in an understable way. Sometimes when I couldn't find right words to describe what I mean essential were my drawing skills so I could simply draw the images appearing in my mind. Being present at all the meetings I have taken a great part in deciding on the general look of the project as well as its tiniest details and I must say I felt proud during the premiere show, 'cause what was born as sketches and loose ideas then they came to the reality as the whole amazing experience. 

We had an idea to include the interraction part, like a mini-game right after Intro, but after having watched the whole project I don't think it's needed anymore also the spectators didn't feel that something would be missing there. I feel that MAYBE the interraction part could even affect the whole experience. The CAVE is an mysterious place itself. I was really impressed seeing it for the first time. Along the whole project I was visiting it from time to time so I got used to, but it's also a kind of magical place where you can change the raw scene into something completely unreal. I'm glad we created there a small theatre where the spectactor was an actor as well going through everything with dancers and musicians. Perhaps some of the visitors were in the CAVE for the first time so I believe we gave them a good portion of impression.

We're going to hold another show currently looking for a suitable event and date. I tried to make a reseach through the upcoming events, but  most of the sites were in Finnish or even if in English the event itself wasn't translated. I hope we'll be able to hold the show by the end of May, when I leave the university...

Details of details

Today we were working in a very different way. Starting early in the morning we were thinking about the plot, the general performance and experience. Writing down things that would happen equally or in order, like music, scene, screen, interaction, etc.

Sound

Today due to misunderstanding of the schedule the classes started normally in the morning, but I came at 12:45. Nevertheless, then we were thinking about what sound would be suitable for our experience. So here is the result:
  • wind turning into voices (whispers), whistling, flute/pipe
  • fire
  • walking, steps
  • branches
  • wildlife: birds
  • March of the Dead (composed by me, click to read more)
As for the voices and whispers we want to make a language mix: Finnish-Polish and some English. And it will be an extract from Kalevala. I put here the same part in Finnish and Polish:

Finnish:
"Nyyrikki, Tapion poika, mies puhas, punakypärä!
Veistä pilkut pitkin maita, rastit vaaroihin rakenna,
jotta tunnen, tuhma, käyä, äkkiouto, tien osoan

Progresses

Yesterday we thought in general who would take care of what. I, as a "photo wizard", made another forest scenery, from 7 photos this time. Now it's also a 20-second animation, where mist is slowly appearing.

Today I had problems with export of this animation..... Such a bad day to work! We were to go to CAVE to see my pictures on the big screen and to revisit. I couldn't have exported the animation at home, so I wanted to do it before we'd go to CAVE (after the lunch break).

At first I couldn't find the button, when I finally did the default settings resized it. I managed to learn how to change it and I wanted to save it to my memory card. This animation was done in Photoshop CS6, but perhaps file was too huge and no matter what I tried to do I couldn't play the video after export.

I decided to try Premiere Pro and it worked! More or less, though... I had about 13GB free but even if they were 7-8GB of weight, I couldn't no idea why.... These were 16- and 32-bit versions. I changed it for 8-bit one, then it weighted over 3GB and luckily I could put it on my memory card. I'd be sick otherwise ;D

After the lunch break our 15-minute meeting turned out to be almost an hour long! But we were talking about the plot in general throwing different ideas what we can do with the space around.

I thought in general about the timeline what could happen after what:
Screen - Scene
Metsä transition - dancers slowly moving like trees or still like stones
3D evironment (...some controller's action, following the voices?...) - voice, incantations
3D video including a hint for an ending - dancers "attack"
Transition to Metsä - dancers disappear

Forests of Kalevala

Like I mentioned earlier I was going to make some research through poems of Kalevala (Finnish national epos) to recall what's there about forests. Quite much... ;)

The thing?

Hahha, it was one of the words that was constantly repeated today and perhaps yesterday, still looking for a name I guess. :D

Lastly we've setting and deciding over different things I'm getting more and more excited about the project! We have a general idea for the story, some part of scenography... I came up with an idea to use this lamp as a part of scenography:
But soon it appeared it wasn't in production so either we'll make one ourselves with branches or leave it in peace. 

There will be one or two dancers to add some mystical mood, along with voices, whispers, indications... Doh... I wish I had my Kalevala here, so I could find some inspirations to share about forest beings and spells, like one of our mates mentioned. I have to read about Tapio and his Tapiola... I'll have to find it on the internet then... Should have read the book once again!

What to add... It was mentioned that my Metsä I will be displayed at some point. It'd be awesome to see the drawing in Cave! Maybe it could appear when the user would be focused on something else? Or as a kind of cover? Like the user would enter to the cave and the drawing would start turning into the 3D forest environment?

I was kind of obsessed with forest in October'13, so I drew one digitally as well:

I got a question if it was possible for me to draw a forest digitally, yes, but I didn't fully get how it'd be used for the experience. My main task is connected to digital world, e.g. combining pictures to get a kind of panorame. Here is my first one:

It was made of 5 or 6 photos. I really like making this kind of stuff! My last photomanipulation comes from... July'13 if I'm not wrong??? I missed it :) Perhaps the task is going to change from time to time, I'm quite flexible.

Oh! And we'll use some video mapping for the floor which is going to make an impression that the user really walks on snowed ground (visually and physically). Maybe it'd be and interesting thing to map outside wall of the Cave as well?

And we're going to use 3D camera for this project as well. It looks funny and works like human eyes. Let's say a camera in the reality would be eyes and 2 memory cards would be a brain. More or less. Usage of this camera is quite similar to any reflex camera, I guess.

Now maybe something about my 3D experience to be clear... I used Bryce 7 and DAZ Studio 4 in the past for basic needs, like setting a scene or something, these programs have little or AT ALL to do with modelling, because the default things and shapes are already there. Here some examples:

Coincidence?

Such a funny coincidence! I decided to join to the course and just today I got to Skype coversation with the tutor and others. But well... Ok, everything from the very beginning.

My room mate is also in the project so earlier with her I had been discussing the idea that had been stuck in my mind since I drew this picture:

So. My general idea was to combine these two in 3D world: create the world where forest would be a labyrinth and the person walking through would feel so uneasy. Mysterious sounds, shapes... loneliness, etc. Talking about it with my room mate we wanted to introduce a kind of plot. Do you know the game Slenderman? The whole game is all about collecting 8 notes put all around a forest, but Slender is chasing you and you don't know where or when he can appear. What's more, you're armed only with a torch and your only defence is your sense and speed. It doesn't sound so complicated but then it's really hard indeed! And some people may lose their senses while playing. Hence, we thought to follow the pattern more or less.

During the Skype conversation it appeared that the team had started doing something so familiar! It's already with additional stuff, some plot, etc. But the main idea of a creepy forsaken forest is maintained. Awww... I'm so excited about the project!
